There's still time to check out Araluen Botanic Park's annual springtime display of more than 140,000 colourful tulips.
Head to the Darling Range in Roleystone before September 25 to get your tulip fix and see the park's colourful floral displays as part of the It's Yates Springtime at Araluen festival.
On the recent sunny day I visited, it seemed the rest of Perth also thought it was a good idea, but even with the crowds there was enough space to appreciate the tulips.
The kids loved the flowers and the streams that run through the park provided plenty of entertainment and a dose of "tame nature".
Many of the tulips centre around the concourse upon entry, grouped in spectacular single, double and triple colour plantings.
A hike up the Grove of the Unforgotten will give you a bird's-eye view down to the main event, while a stroll along the stream towards Bennett's Lawn is rewarded with more plantings, native bushland and, if you're lucky, smaller crowds.
While the tulip is best suited to the climes of the Northern Hemisphere, Araluen has a north-south valley aspect and micro-climate with loam soils and high rainfall that are perfect for cultivating exotic and cool-climate plants.
Along with the mass plantings of tulips, be sure to see the park's camellias. Its mature magnolias are in full bloom, too.
During the festival, there are performances in the amphitheatre along with food from the Chalet Healy Cafe and other vendors.
The park also offers springtime tours on weekdays (except Tuesdays) for groups of eight-plus, and there's a train with a drive-guide running through the park daily from 10am to 4pm.
- Entry into the gardens is $15 for adults, $12 concession and $7 for children six to 15 years. The park offers discounted entry on Tuesdays: $8 for adults and $4 for children.
- Fares for the train are $5 for adults and $3 for children.
- A walk and springtime tour costs $20; the walk, tour and coffee are $25; and a walk, tour, coffee and train ride are $30. Bookings are essential. Email email@example.com or phone 9234 2200.
