Bali’s ultra-luxurious tented camp Capella Ubud is hidden away in dense rainforest on a slope that leads to Wos River in Keliki Village.
As swish as it is, leave the high heels at home because although accommodation on flat land is available, some tented retreats are “perched up high and located on steep terrain”.
This is why Capella suggests it’s not the place for children under six or guests with mobility issues. But it’s ideal for those who want to experience nature’s beauty and sounds; in fact TVs and audio systems are supplied only on request and come with headsets, so as not to disturb other guests. Bliss.
Guests are given a complimentary duffel bag with camp essentials such as sunscreen, organic face mist, insect repellent and a rain poncho.
The tented retreats with private pools are decorated with valuable antiques and furniture, including some from the owner’s private collection.
Personal assistants are able to design a bespoke itinerary for you to explore the area, which includes waterfalls, temples and rice terraces. Or stay at camp and indulge in a bedtime hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows while listening to a local storyteller.
There are also cooking classes and chocolate making — from bean to bar.
Among the signature restaurants is Api Jiwa. "Meaning ‘fire to the soul’ in ancient Sanskrit, [Api Jiwa] is an interactive Asian street food barbecue that brings a theatrical farm-to-table flavour to camp dining," Capella explains.
"Adventure wellness" for guests includes "pampering spa treatments designed around the moon phases, spiritual and sound healing as well as in-retreat rituals".
"Timeless charm, with a wink back to the early 1800s, is balanced by modern conveniences such as air-conditioning, high-speed wi-fi, a complimentary smart phone inclusive of data, an in-retreat refreshment trunk and an Illy espresso machine as well as a tea station," Capella says of its accommodation features.
"The one-bedroom retreats, measured at 173sqm, and the two-bedroom lodge, measured at 217sqm, are adorned by large outdoor decks and indoor and outdoor bathrooms, featuring a hammered copper stand-alone bath, double washbasins and an indoor and outdoor shower."
Bathroom amenities are 100 per cent natural, plus there is a soap menu with handmade organic soap options.
