If you wear glasses and are due for a new passport, then take note: spectacles will not be allowed in photos from July 1.
The Australian Government’s travel advice website Smartraveller today tweeted about the change to passport photo guidelines.
The Australian Passport Office said the change would further strengthen the integrity of the Australian passport.
“Research has shown that glasses adversely affect passport facial matching. Matching is more accurate without glasses,” the department said.
“A limited exemption for medical reasons may apply where supported by a medical certificate.”
Medical reasons include severe light sensitivity or recent eye surgery, but vision impairment will not suffice for an exemption.
“If glasses must be worn for medical reasons, the frames must not obscure the eyes and there must be no reflection from the lenses,” the Australian Passport Office said.
