Learn about Perth's oldest pubs, WA's Sikh history, the State's first female police officers and local Aboriginal heritage while getting a peek inside some of Perth's most historic buildings at this weekend's Perth Heritage Days.
Running over October 14-15, the festival includes open days and tours at historic sites including the Supreme Court of WA (pictured above), the Old Central Fire Station, Mercedes College, East Perth Cemeteries, His Majesty's Theatre, Perth Modern School, the WACA and the Old Observatory.
There's a particularly full program of events at the open day at Government House on Sunday, including separate tours of the house and the cellar, ballroom dancing demonstrations, meet the gardener tours and children's activities such as a petting zoo with farm animals that would have once been kept on the property.
Other guided tours focus on particular aspects of WA's history, such as Noongar heritage and culture, Perth's oldest pubs, the architecture of Perth's east end, the role of the Sikh community in our State's history and more.
There's also a program of exhibitions, including Back to Our Beginnings, a retrospective photographic exhibition drawing from The West Australian's historical archive, and various talks touching on everything from the remarkable life of businesswoman and philanthropist Mary Raine to WA's first female police officers and archaeological finds unearthed during the construction of Elizabeth Quay.
There will also be heritage activities and fun for all ages in Cathedral Square, storytelling sessions with children's authors, vocal and classic music performances, and more.
