Spirit of the Swan Valley
A new distillery trail shows off some truly delectable drops, writes STEPHEN SCOURFIELD
We’re all looking for a bit of Christmas spirit this year, and there’s probably nowhere better than the Swan Valley.
For the Swan Valley Distillery Trail is the first of its kind in Australia, linking five distilleries handcrafting gin, vodka, brandy, limoncello and rum.
Most will know the valley’s wine history, dating back to the first vines in 1829, but these considerably younger distilleries have quickly established a name for producing quality tipples and fun visitor experiences.
Great Northern Distillery has a guided tour through the distillery, with samples of its premium Canefine rums, gin, vodka and handcrafted liqueurs. Or sit back, alfresco, with a classic cocktail, overlooking the vines. Bar staff are usually up for a chat and to give insight into the distilling process.
It is the southern home of Kimberley Rum Company’s Canefire.
