Coast and inland. Ocean and river. Saltwater and freshwater.

Viking has cleverly combined its ocean voyages and classic river cruises to come up with more variety in our travel.

And in May 2022, nearly a year from now, we will travel the Fjords to the Rhine.

We are taking a Travel Club Tour to experience Nordic wonders by sea, then sail the Rhine River. We have combined two of Viking’s cruises to put together and interesting and varied 15 day trip.

We start in Norway and end up in Switzerland.

And Travel Club Tours in partnership with Viking Cruises is delighted that our guests will sail first on the ocean ship Viking Jupiter, which was launched in 2019 launch, and had only a few small sailings before shutdown, and so is pretty much brand new, and then on Viking Gersemi, which was launched this year (2021), and is state of the art.

Bergen is picture-postcard stuff — multi-coloured buildings not just along the water’s edge, but also up the hillsides among the trees.

The old, wooden buildings, of different colours on picturesque “Hanseatic Wharf”.

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Bryggen is a visible remnant from the era when Bergen was the centre of trade between Norway and the rest of Europe.

It is a city with narrow cobbled alleyways — the second biggest city in Norway, Bergen has retained the atmosphere of a small town.

And it is there that we will join the Viking ships — in this city with Viking roots.

We will voyage together through Norway’s dramatic fjord landscapes, cruising to small village of Flam, at the innermost bank of the Aurlandsfjord, surrounded by mountains, valleys and waterfalls.

After the wooden city of Stavanger, we will visit Kristiansand, in southern Norway, with palm trees on the beach and set amid thousands of islands, and on to Oslo.

From the seaside village of Skagen in Denmark, we will sail the North Sea to Amsterdam and then see the famous windmills in Kinderdijk. There are 19 windmills and other ingenious technologies built in the 18th century to control flooding.

On the Rhine, we will see Cologne’s famous cathedral (the biggest Gothic church in northern Europe, with its huge twin towers) and visit Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, with its views over Koblenz and the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers.

The Middle Rhine is defined by fortresses, cathedrals, historic cities, medieval towns and spectacular scenery.

We will dip into multicultural Strasbourg in France. After that comes Breisach, in one of the warmest parts of Germany, next to Alsace, and famous for its wine growing. We disembark in Basel in Switzerland, famous for its many museums.

Rhine, Viking Shores & Fjords, from Bergen to Basel, May 2022

The 14 night, 15 day voyage starts on May 5 (2022), but there are opportunities for extra days before and after the cruises.

We have seven options including:

* Lake Como, Lucerne, Basel, Bergen, Oslo and Scenic Train.

* Iceland and the Golden Circle.

* The best of Norway & Scenic Train.

Prices start from $10,640 per person (cruise only), twin share, in a deluxe veranda stateroom on the ocean and a French balcony on the river cruise.

A combination of a deluxe veranda stateroom (on the ocean voyage) and a veranda (on the river cruise) starts from $11,340 per person (cruise only).

Because we have held an allocation of cabins on the ocean-river combination, there is a saving of $1000 per person (a full $2000 per couple) on the ticket price. This rate is set now, so as prices rise this year we will always have the best rate you can get.

For both Travel Club Tours, guests have the option of booking a package, flying with Finnair. And they have added some nice additions for our guests.

Finnair will be offering exclusive pricing and bonuses in both economy and business class for West Travel Club travellers.

* Economy Class travellers get Business Class Lounge access in Helsinki in both directions, and a free Economy Comfort Seat upgrade on one long haul leg Asia/Europe.

* Business Class passengers get a $100 dining voucher per stateroom to be used on return to Australia. They also get 60 Euro per stateroom Duty Free Vouchers to be used on Finnair aircraft.

(Terms and conditions apply and this is only available through Viking Cruises in conjunction with the two cruises.)
